Tacon comes with 13 years of experience coaching boys basketball in Hawai'i and 28 years of coaching experience overall. He was most recently the head boys basketball coach at Moanalua High School in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association from 2006-13, advancing to six state tournaments. Before that, Tacon coached from 2001-06 at Punahou School.
"We are very excited to have Greg join our staff and excited for our basketball program," Associate Athletic Director Maurice Maggiolino said. "Greg's experience running a program in both the ILH and OIA will be a major benefit to our student-athletes. His ability to communicate bodes well for everybody involved in our basketball program."
Prior to moving to Hawai'i, the University of La Verne graduate, with his degree in Physical Education, coached boys basketball at San Lorenzo High School in California from 1986-90 and then coached a variety of sports at Shorecrest High School in Washington from 1990-2000.
"I loved my time at Moanalua with the wonderful bunch of kids that we had there," said Tacon. "But the opportunity to become a part of Kamehameha Schools was a great. The mission that they have to help the children of Hawai'i is something I feel great to be a part of. It is great to get back to the ILH, with the level of competition that there is in that league, but the mission of Kamehameha is really what brought me here."
Tacon takes over for Julian Nakanishi, who stepped down in March after coaching the Warriors for two seasons.
Kamehameha Schools is a private, educational, charitable trust founded and endowed by the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Kamehameha Schools operates a statewide educational system enrolling over 6,900 students of Hawaiian ancestry at K-12 campuses on O'ahu, Maui and Hawai'i and 30 preschool sites statewide. Over 40,000 additional Hawaiian learners and caregivers are served each year through a range of other Kamehameha Schools outreach programs, community collaborations and financial aid opportunities in Hawai'i and across the continental United States.
