Statement from Kamehameha Schools CEO Dee Jay Mailer

August 2, 2005

Contributed by Thomas Yoshida

None of our current students will be affected by this ruling. They will continue to be our strength and the reason for our existence.

We will continue to fight for our rights in the courts to serve these students, on our campuses and in our island communities. We can do no less because Bernice Pauahi Bishop willed it and our strategic plan mandates it.

We will examine and evaluate how every educational initiative meets our mission … to make sure that we are serving as many Hawaiian children as we possibly can.

And we will foster the understanding and the widespread practice of all things Hawaiian in order to further strengthen our Hawaiian culture.

Mahalo to all who fight with us and to our students and families who give us great pride. On Saturday, we ask everyone to join us in a rally at 'Iolani Palace, at 8 a.m. Which will be followed by a march to Mauna 'Ala to pay our respects to our ali'i who have given us the privilege of serving their people.
