Resignation of the CAO

October 22, 2001

Contributed by CEO Message

Mr. Morihara has my sincere appreciation and gratitude for his efforts over the past few months, and he will continue to serve as a special assistant to the CEO until the end of October 2001. Effective immediately, I will assume the responsibilities of the CAO while I consult with the trustees and chief executives on the next steps for establishing leadership for the divisions reporting to the CAO. I have already met with the CAO direct reports to announce the changes and to acknowledge Gerald's contributions, and have asked these staff to work together and utilize their exemplary skills and abilities during this transition period. I will be calling upon the division directors to work closely with me on leadership planning for this group. In the interim, I have appointed Mrs. Janis Kane the interim director of Human Resources as the search for a permanent director continues (Mrs. Kane is not a candidate for the HR directorship). I have every confidence in Mrs. Kane's ability to assume the leadership responsibilities, given her commitment to and strong emphasis on inclusive decision-making and improving efficiency and effectiveness. Mahalo for your continuing support during this transition. Hamilton I. McCubbin Chief Executive Officer HIM/mb
