New Human Resources Director Named

May 1, 2002

Contributed by CEO Message

COO Yeaman describes Richard as a seasoned HR professional with extensive background in large organization, multi-site environments, and experience in areas like change management, recruitment and compensation that will have direct application at KS. Eric also says Richard has an easy going, approachable style that will be a good fit with our institution. Richard also served as vice president of human resources for Dole Packaged Foods Company in California before returning to Hawai'i in 1995. He is an 'Iolani School graduate and earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His anticipated start date at Kamehameha is June 12. I would like to commend the diligence and perseverance of the Screening Committee that undertook to find a leader for this crucial function. This was an arduous assignment, and I imposed upon this committee, under the leadership of Sandy Behenna, to pay particular attention to Kamehameha's unique requirements in this area. I am satisfied that the committee identified the three strongest finalists for the COO's selection, and I am fully supportive of his choice. The work of this Trust is about people, and we welcome Richard's experience and leadership in supporting the needs of our people in the jobs they perform on behalf of the institution as we move forward in fulfilling Kamehameha's educational mission. I would also like to recognize and thank Janis Kane, who is serving as HR director in the interim, and who has agreed to continue to do so until Richard Lau comes aboard. She has done a wonderful job in her ongoing HR capacities and in her new role in the Office of Strategic Planning throughout the search and selection process. Mahalo to you, Janis, and to all who added support and assistance to keeping Kamehameha's human resources initiatives moving forward over the past eight months. Hamilton I. McCubbin, Ph.D.
