The film, directed by Dr. Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey Buyers (KS 74), won critical acclaim internationally and was considered for an Academy Award in 1996. Kamehameha Schools CEO Hamilton I. McCubbin, Ph.D. (KS 59), who is also a member of the Symphony's Board of Directors, will introduce the film. Dr. Buyers will narrate the film presentation live to the accompaniment of the Symphony.
Through archival film footage and photographs, and the Honolulu Symphony's performance of the Lili'uokalani Symphony, the film traces how the native Hawaiian culture has been challenged by foreign influences. From the ravages of foreign diseases and sustained interaction with missionaries, businessmen and immigrant workers to the overthrow, annexation and statehood, Hawaiians have struggled to participate in a changing society while preserving their language and traditions.
The screening is a CINEMATIC MASTERWORKS! presentation by The Honolulu Symphony, with Samuel Wong conducting and featuring Jeffrey Biegel on piano.
The Nov. 1 showing is at 8pm; the Nov. 3 screening begins at 4pm. Tickets are available through the Blaisdell Center box office. Groups of 10 or more should inquire with the Symphony about discount prices at 808-792-2000.
As an added facet to the event, four of Hawaii's leading native artists - Sean Browne (KS 71), Kauka deSilva (KS 71), Anne Kapulani Landgraf (KS 84) and Kaili Chun (KS 80) ñ will exhibit samples of their work in the theatre foyer.
Other KS graduates involved: Neal Hannahs (KS 69) was Executive Producer of the Lili'uokalani Symphony, which was commissioned by the Queen Lili'uokalani Trust. Nola Nahulu (KS 71) will be conducting the Youth Choir.
