KS Chancellor/CEO Resigns

May 5, 2003

Contributed by Kekoa Paulsen

The board issued the following statement to Kamehameha Schools stakeholders and supporters: The Board of Trustees has accepted the resignation of Dr. Hamilton McCubbin, effective immediately. As a personnel matter, it is not in the best interest of this institution to discuss the details of Dr. McCubbin's departure. Our primary responsibility as trustees is to support and perpetuate Kamehameha Schools and its educational mission. What is best for Kamehameha has always guided us and will continue to guide us. This includes our decision to accept Dr. McCubbin's resignation. We will now begin the search for new leadership to manage Kamehameha Schools as we move forward with Pauahi's Legacy Lives. We seek a leader who exhibits the values and high standards of conduct that are the foundation of this institution. Our Vice President for Legal Affairs, Colleen Wong, will serve as acting CEO while we conduct a search for Dr. McCubbin's replacement. We affirm the CEO governance structure and we are committed to keeping the CEO management structure in place. We plan to have a new CEO in place within six months. We have begun looking for a search firm and will keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, we can assure our faculty and staff, students, parents, alumni and the community at large that our mission to provide education for Hawaiians in perpetuity will continue uninterrupted. Our schools and business operations will function as they normally do under Acting CEO Wong and our strong executive team, and all extension and outreach programs will continue. Dr. McCubbin became the first CEO of Kamehameha Schools in February 2000. Kamehameha Schools was founded in 1887 at the behest of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. It is a recognized leader in education in Hawaii, serving 4,400 students at three campuses on Oahu, Maui and Hawai'i. It reaches another 12,000 children through its pre-school, summer school and enrichment programs.
