Kamehameha Schools provides $1.2 million in financial support to charter schools under Ho’olako Like

March 23, 2004

Ho'olako Like offers start-up charter schools an opportunity to collaborate with KS to obtain financial, technical and resource support. Eligible charter schools that commit to the provisions of a contractual agreement with KS may receive a minimum of $1 for every $4 of per pupil allocation received from the State of Hawai'i. Other examples of support being provided by KS include curriculum and professional development activities, baseline accountability and program evaluation development, or other collaborations that facilitate effective education reform.

Of these 11 schools, three are new awardees: Ka Waihona 'o Ka Na'auao in Waianae, Ke Kula 'o Nawahiokalani'opu'u Iki Laboratory in Kea'au, and Kua O Ka La in Pahoa. These start-up charter schools serve nearly 300 students, most of whom are of Hawaiian ancestry and received $300,000 in funding from Ho'olako Like.

According to Kauanoe Kamana, director of Ke Kula 'o Nawahiokalani'opu'u Iki Laboratory, "The Ho'olako Like funding we have received enables us to strengthen Hawaiian identity and broaden academic offerings at our school. It has allowed us to hire teachers during the school year and will provide for summer school this year. We educate through Hawaiian cultural perspectives and provide a quality Hawaiian, language medium program where students, families and staff grow together. This funding is indeed a blessing as it helps us strengthen our Hawaiian identity."

Ho'olako Like also renewed more than $900,000 in funding to eight start-up charter schools across the state:

  • Kula Aupuni Ni'ihau a Kahelelani Aloha Public Charter School, Waimea, Kaua'i
  • Ke Kula Ni'ihau o Kekaha Learning Center Public Charter School, Kekaha, Kaua'i
  • Ke Kula o Samuel Kamakau Laboratory Public Charter School, Kane'ohe, O'ahu
  • Hakipu'u Learning Center, Kane'ohe, O'ahu
  • Ka 'Umeke Ka'eo Public Charter School, Keaukaha, Hawai'i
