The course will follow the life of Kamehameha the Great, as a child, a student, a warrior and an ali'i, in a keiki-friendly, easy-to-follow format. The course also talks about leadership, responsibility and courage, encouraging family interaction with activities and links to other readings and videos.
The Ka Na'i Aupuni course provides a unique opportunity to learn more about Kamehameha the Great's training and life, builds cultural and historical connections through online huaka'i and supplemental readings, builds family connections through activities, and builds family discussion around topics about leadership skills and responsibilities.
"Kamehameha the Great was a charismatic, spiritual, humble and innovative leader, whose life and leadership continue to influence us today," said Dorothy Hirata, director of the Instructional Services Center at Kamehameha Schools. "I have completed this course twice myself and have enjoyed reflecting on my own leadership skills while sharing and learning through interactive activities with my young daughter. I know families in Hawai'i and beyond will both benefit from and enjoy taking this class!"
The course is worth five hours of service learning for Nā Ho'okama, 'Imi Na'auao, Pauahi Keiki Scholars and Kipona Scholarship programs.
