Chosen out of hundreds of entries, the schools' Concert Glee Club will join the likes of St. Olaf College, Luther College and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
"We have the honor of being the first and only choir from Hawai'i to be invited to an ACDA convention, said Timothy Ho, Performing Arts interim head. "Although this event isn't a competition – the competition is being selected among the hundreds who wish for a spot there. "It's like the "Superbowl" of choral events."
The 76 representatives from the Concert Glee Club will perform twice at The Wilshire Christian Church and once at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall in Pasadena.
"It's an amazing accomplishment for our students, said Ho. "I'm so proud of our students, they worked hard and they deserve this great honor."
"Opening our performance is Nakolokolo Ka Lani Ka Honua Ke Ao, a "Name Chant" in honor of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I and founder of the Kamehameha Schools. This chant reaffirms our ties to the Kamehameha dynasty, and presents the Concert Glee Club as "children of Pauahi," said Ho. "In addition to this chant, the Concert Glee Club will be performing other songs which include Ka Pilina, in celebration of this convention. Depicting a gathering of indigenous Hawaiian birds, Ka Pilina reminds us of the beauty and splendor each of us bring to this amazing event."
Kamehameha Schools is a statewide educational system founded and endowed by the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Currently, more than 5,700 students of Hawaiian ancestry are enrolled in K-12 campuses on three islands and at more than 30 preschool sites statewide. Kamehameha Schools also serves thousands of other Hawaiian learners each year through a range of outreach programs, community collaborations and financial aid opportunities in Hawai'i and across the continental United States.
