Kamehameha Schools accepting applications for Ho’olauna Keauhou through May 2

April 28, 2003

Contributed by Kekoa Paulsen

"The program's main objective is to increase participants' awareness about their immediate environment and their culture," explained Makana Garma, a curriculum specialist in the KS Enrichment Programs office. Through a series of field trips to historic and culturally significant sites, students take part in a variety of hands-on activities, including fishpond restoration, coconut weaving and the creation of pathways in dryland forests. Among the sites participants will visit are the Ka'upulehu Cultural Center, the Oceanic Institute and the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Gardens. The fee for Ho'olauna Keauhou is $125. Financial aid is available to qualified students. Transportation may be arranged for East Hawai'i students who wish to participate, if needed, at no additional cost. For an application or more information, please call Kamehameha Schools' Enrichment Programs office on O'ahu at (808) 842-8761 or a Neighbor Island Regional Resource Center (NIRRC) on the Big Island at 322-5400 (West Hawai'i) or 935-0889 (East Hawai'i). Kamehameha Schools' policy is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law. Kamehameha Schools is a statewide educational system founded and endowed by the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, comprising three campuses on three islands and more than 30 preschool sites throughout the state of Hawai'i. Nearly 4,900 preschool through grade 12 students of Hawaiian ancestry are currently enrolled. Through a range of outreach programs and financial aid opportunities, Kamehameha extends its educational reach and resources to meet the needs of thousands of other Hawaiian learners not served within its classrooms.
