Pursuant to that court order, the Probate Court appointed seven individuals on Jan. 31, 2012, to serve as members of a Trustee Screening Committee to assist the court in the trustee selection process. The individuals serving on the Screening Committee are: Wendy B. Crabb, George "Keoki" Freeland, Richard A. Coons, Cheryl Lehua Ka'uhane Lupenui, Benjamin M. Matsubara, Michael E. Rawlins and Wesley T. Park.
Accepting their charge from the court, the Screening Committee undertook a four-month candidate review process to identify three individuals whose names were then submitted to the Probate Court. The Probate Court will then select one of the three individuals as successor trustee to Trustee Ing.
The process employed by the Screening Committee involved broad dissemination and publication of notice of the screening process; solicitation of applications from interested individuals; screening 46 applications from candidates; personal interviews of a semi-final list of candidates; interviews of candidate references, and background checks of candidates.
As a result of that process, the Screening Committee identified three individuals determined to be the best qualified to serve as a Trustee of the Estate of Bernice Pauahi Bishop. The names of these finalists —– Anton C. Krucky, Robert Kaleookalani Witt Nobriga and T. Aulani Wilhelm — were then submitted to the Probate Court for the court's selection as trustee.
The Screening Committee also published the names of the finalists in the Honolulu Star Advertiser (July 15), Pacific Business News (July 20), Maui News (July 15), Hawaii Tribune Herald (July 19), West Hawaii Today (July 16), The Garden Island (July 15) and Ka Wai Ola o OHA in its August 2012 edition. In addition to publishing the names of the finalists, the Screening Committee also invited public comment and/or expressions of support of the candidates, to be submitted in writing no later than 30 days after initial publication, in this case Aug. 14, 2012.
The Screening Committee will file the written comments it receives with the Probate Court for its consideration. The Probate Court, then, makes the final selection of the Successor Trustee of the Estate of Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
A full discussion of the process for selecting Kamehameha Schools trustees is provided in pp. 27-38 of the Master's Report on the Petition for the Establishment of a Procedure for Selection of Trustees filed on November 22, 1999, and were incorporated by reference in the Court's Order Granting Petition for the Establishment of a Procedure for Selection of Future Trustees filed January 6, 2000.
