"Our division produces multi-media products that align with Kamehameha's effort to extend our reach to as many keiki as possible in our community," said Kehau Abad, Director of Kamehameha Publishing. "Our publications amplify Hawaiian perspectives and enhance knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture. We hope our discount program encourages all schools in Hawai'i to make our titles available to their students, but we are particularly interested in reaching out to the public schools, where so many of our Native Hawaiian children are learning."
"Mahalo nui loa to Kamehameha Schools and Kamehameha Publishing for reaching out to our students in this way," said Superintendent of Schools Pat Hamamoto. "This generous pricing structure will help our teachers get quality materials into their classrooms, and we are grateful."
New titles include Lumpy Poi and Twisting Eels, the second volume in a 12-part series on the life of Kamehameha I; No ka 'Elepaio Kolohe (the Naughty 'Elepaio), a bilingual publication for young readers produced in partnership with the Hale Kuamo'o Center for Hawaiian Language and Culture at the University of Hawaii-Hilo; and Lauka'ie'ie: A Hawaiian Legend Retold, aimed at elementary readers. No ka 'Elepaio Kolohe and Lauka'ie'ie will be available in late March, at which time they can be ordered through the Kamehameha Publishing website, www.kamehamehapublishing.org.
"This program is just part of the spirit of partnership that allows Kamehameha Schools to serve thousands of children in public schools in different ways, including literacy enhancement, mentoring and cultural enrichment," said Shawn Kana'iaupuni, Kamehameha Schools' Director of Public Education Support. "It is a delight to offer terrific books to encourage our keiki to become excited about reading and learning."
Kamehameha Schools is a private, educational, charitable trust founded and endowed by the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Kamehameha Schools operates a statewide educational system enrolling more than 6,700 students of Hawaiian ancestry at K-12 campuses on O'ahu, Maui and Hawai'i and at 31 preschool sites statewide. Thousands of additional Hawaiian learners are also being served through a range of other Kamehameha Schools outreach programs, community collaborations and financial aid opportunities in Hawai'i and across the continental United States.
