Governor Signs Two Bills Important to KS

April 5, 2002

Contributed by CEO Message

SB 2662 allows non-profit organizations to collaborate with the DOE to manage public schools, bringing to the table new educational expertise in curriculum development, educational and cultural materials, equipment, support for professional development and much needed additional funding. The bill's approval means KS will now move forward with the steps necessary to allow the school to support a non-profit to participate in this new concept. My special thanks to the members of the strategic implementation team who worked tirelessly to see this legislation become law, a rare accomplishment for a first-time introduction. Team members Colleen Wong, Charlene Hoe, Linda O'Day, Skip Hare, Sharlene Chun-Lum, Marsha Bolson, Sabrina Toma and Myron Mitsuyasu are to be congratulated. SB 2283 codifies and adds the definition of school readiness to Act 77, Session Laws of Hawaii 1997, in an effort to create conditions that will enable children in Hawaii to succeed in kindergarten and subsequent school experiences. The legislation also calls for the development of policies and strategies for measuring results and performance indicators of school readiness that will strengthen Hawaii's early childhood system and build capacity for sustainability. Mahalo to Shawn Kanaiaupuni who worked with the School Readiness Task Force to draft the bill with Good Beginnings Alliance. Aloha, Hamilton McCubbin Chief Executive Officer
