Four shopping centers, one day, one cause

March 11, 2010

Kahala Mall, Pearlridge Center, Royal Hawaiian Center and Windward Mall will be participating in the simultaneous, one-day event. The value of the Mālama Card and its positive impact on customers and merchants located on Kamehameha Schools' commercial properties has driven dozens of businesses at all four shopping centers to participate.

"We're pleased to be a part of the Mālama Card program which gives customers one more reason to shop at Windward Mall," said Jonathan Kim, general manager, Windward Mall. "We invite the community to visit the mall on Saturday to sign up for the program, enjoy some wonderful entertainment and take advantage of Mālama Card discounts!"

The Mālama Card program, funded and administered by KS, was created as a way to generate business for its commercial tenants during these difficult economic times. Income from the Schools' commercial leases supports the Schools' educational mission that impacted over 40,000 learners and families last year through KS' community outreach programs and on all three campuses.

Mālama at the Mall event highlights:

  • Kahala Mall: Brother Nolan, a performance by Hawaiian focused charter school, Halau Ku Mana, Krater 96, plus games, prizes and balloons for the keiki.

  • Pearlridge Center: Entertainment by Hawaiian-focused charter school, Ka Waihona o Ka Na'auao's 'ukulele ensemble, emcee Ms. Chanel from 93.1 the Zone, plus games and prizes!

  • Royal Hawaiian Center: Entertainment by Kaiholu and the Kamehameha Schools' Alumni Glee Club, plus games, prizes and balloons for the keiki.

  • Windward Mall: Entertainment by Hui Malama o Ke Kai, KCCN, plus games, prizes and balloons for the keiki.

There will be Mālama Card sign-up tables at each site as well as a list of all participating merchants at each shopping center.

With over 135 merchants, Mālama Card includes a growing number of participating businesses including eateries, jewelry stores, spas, doctor's offices and other retailers, many of whom are locally owned and operated. Card members can save on everything from plate lunches and teeth whitening to apparel and beauty treatments.

For a list of all merchants and discounts, go to www.malamacard.com.

Key elements of the Mālama Card program:

  • The Mālama Card program is free to join and available to the general public.

  • To obtain a card, visit a participating merchant or download a temporary card from www.malamacard.com. The website also includes updated specials and discounts from participating businesses.

  • Member participation in the Mālama Card program supports Kamehameha Schools' educational mission.

  • Merchants who participate in the Mālama Card program are located on Kamehameha Schools' lands which generate the revenue needed to fulfill the trust's educational mission.

  • Mālama means to care for, to nurture. With the Mālama Card, shoppers, businesses and Kamehameha Schools benefit.

All Mālama Card merchants are located on Kamehameha Schools' commercial properties. These properties include Royal Hawaiian Center, Windward Mall, Pearlridge Center, Kahala Mall, Kapālama Shopping Center, as well as Waipahu, Waiakamilo, Kaka'ako, Keauhou, and Hawai'i Kai. Income from the school's commercial leases fund KS' campus and community outreach programs throughout the state.

Kamehameha Schools is a private, educational, charitable trust founded and endowed by the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Kamehameha Schools operates a statewide educational system enrolling more than 6,900 students of Hawaiian ancestry at K-12 campuses on O'ahu, Maui and Hawai'i and 31 preschool sites statewide. Approximately 37,500 additional Hawaiian learners are served each year through a range of other Kamehameha Schools' outreach programs, community collaborations and financial aid opportunities in Hawai'i and across the continental United States.
