Along with the students, many KS staff members also completed the events, including KS Kapālama Po'o Kula Earl Kim, KS Trustee Micah Kane, and numerous KS Kapālama teachers.
KS-Kapālama started its fitness program in 1978, having freshman complete either a 15k run or 4k swim. It was later reduced to a 10k run and a 3k swim in 1996 due to scheduling issues. In 1989, the biathlon was added for sophomores to maintain the fitness levels reached in ninth grade.
