What does educational success look like for Hawaiʻi’s keiki? 🎓   Findings from the 2024 ʻImi Pono Hawaiʻi Wellbeing Survey show that families across the state value education that prepares keiki to live, work, and raise families; contribute to their communities; and find good-paying jobs.   Yet, 1 in 4 families still face barriers like cost and transportation. Through it all, learners grow into leaders—grounded in family, mentorship, and resilience.   Curious to learn more? Hōʻike is an annual tradition at Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha Hawaiʻi, where high school haumāna share moʻolelo from our history on stage in dynamic and entertaining ways. Here is a moment captured at this year's Merrie Monarch ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi broadcast where ʻAwapuhi, a recent KSHʻ25 graduate, shared the significance of this past hear's Hōʻike performance of ʻEMALANI: Scenes from the Life of Queen Emma. This opera, written by kumu Herb Mahelona, spans the entire life of Queen Emma and highlights many significant events in her life and in the history of Hawaiʻi. In Lahaina, families are reconnecting to ʻāina, culture, and each other through hands-on papa and pōhaku workshops that support healing and community restoration. Earlier this year, Ku‘ia Agricultural Education Center, a KS Kaiāulu partner, hosted workshops for families affected by the fires to reclaim their roots in the famous ahupua‘a. Led by Lo‘iloa, a Maui nonprofit dedicated to healing through Hawaiian practices, keiki and kūpuna worked side by side, carving boards and stone pounders to prepare kalo — some replacing cherished tools lost in the flames.
