Mālama Ola Minute: A parent's playbook for supporting student-athletes

Oct. 1, 2024

Sports play a vital role in a child’s overall development, nurturing both physical and social well-being. Just as important is the role parents play in fostering your child’s interest and commitment to athletics. By modeling a positive, balanced attitude, mākua can significantly influence a child’s skill level and self-esteem.

Beyond just taking them to practice and cheering them on at games, here are some tips to positively support your student-athlete:

  • Lead by example
Children often emulate their parents’ behavior, so displaying good sportsmanship is essential. Cheer not only for your child but also their teammates and even strong performances from the opposing team. Demonstrating respect for coaches and officials, even when the game doesn’t go your way, creates a positive sporting environment.

Your attitude shapes your child’s view of the sport and everyone involved, helping them adopt a balanced and respectful attitude.

  • Focus on effort, not outcomes
From the beginning, encourage your child to set goals and intentions for playing beyond just winning. Throughout the season, check in with them to see if they are enjoying it and celebrate the hard work, improvements and fun they have. When they do face challenges, listen and offer constructive feedback, reminding them that failure is a part of learning.

This approach builds resilience and encourages long-term engagement in physical activity.

  • Let coaches coach
It’s a well-known adage for a reason! From the start of the season, take the time to understand the coach’s philosophy and efforts, recognizing that many are volunteers and fellow parents to your keiki’s teammates. By trusting their expertise and supporting their decisions, you reinforce their authority and contribute to a cohesive team environment.

If you have questions, address them respectfully in private or during scheduled sessions. Collaboration with coaches ensures more holistic support for your keiki’s development.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to help your child grow not only as an athlete but as a person. By embracing these positive parenting strategies, you can ensure that their sports experience is both enjoyable and enriching to their well-being.
