Nā Hīmeni Kalikiano is a monthly offering of mele and pule led by nā kahu of Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha. These familiar songs and heartfelt prayers help us grow our relationship with Ke Akua, grounding our daily lives in love, service and spiritual discipline.
“Hoe a Mau” is a hīmeni of encouragement. Paddle onward, hoe a mau.
There is much to be grateful for in our journey with Iesū but sometimes we may feel like giving up. Maybe we chose a fast too difficult for Lent. Perhaps the end of the quarter kuleana and Song Contest and Hōʻike preparation is overwhelming. We can see the shore of spring respite ahead, so close and yet so far away.
“Hoe a Mau” ends with the reminder that will hold us as we paddle forward: “Pili iā ia, pili paʻa a hoe a mau”. Cling to Him, in this case, meaning cling to Jesus. Hold on steadfastly and paddle on. E hoe a mau kākou!
E ko mākou Makua i loko o ka lani,
Our father in heaven,
Ke hoʻonani aku nei mākou iā ʻOe.
We praise You.
E ʻoluʻolu, e huikala mai iā mākou i ko mākou lawehala.
Please, forgive us of our sins.
E hoʻopiha mai i ko mākou mau kino me Kou ikaika.
Fill our bodies with your strength.
E hoʻopiha mai i ko mākou mau naʻau me Kou aloha.
Fill our hearts with your love.
E hoʻopiha mai i ko mākou mau ʻuhane me Kou naʻauao.
Fill our spirits with your wisdom.
E ʻoluʻolu, e kōkua mai iā mākou, nā mea e hoe a mau iā ʻOe.
Please, help us, the ones who paddle forward toward You.
Ma ka inoa o ka Haku Iesū, ʻĀmene.
In the name of the Lord Jesus, Amen.
