As part of our ongoing efforts to support the health and well-being of our haumāna, the Kamehameha Schools Mālama Ola Division presents the Mālama Ola Minute series. This month, we focus on tips and inspiration for fostering lokomaikaʻi – kindness and grace – in your family and community.

Mālama Ola Minute: Ways to celebrate kindness year-round

Nov. 1, 2023

In the spirit of World Kindness Day on November 13, we invite you to join us in promoting acts of lokomaikaʻi – kindness that can bring positivity and connection into our lives. Practicing compassion can make a profound difference in a world that sometimes feels busy and challenging. Here are three ways that ʻohana can share with their keiki and ʻōpio to celebrate World Kindness Day year-round.

Notice and Express Gratitude
Encourage your children to identify and express gratitude. Create time to notice and reflect on the things your family is grateful for. Tune in to the small everyday details of life and notice the good things you might sometimes take for granted. Expressing gratitude is about showing heartfelt appreciation. Have them write thank-you notes or say "thank you" to friends, family, teachers, and others who have positively impacted their lives. Gratitude is a simple but powerful way to spread kindness.

Random Acts of Kindness
Encourage your children to perform random acts of kindness. This could be as simple as holding the door for someone, offering a smile to a stranger, or helping a classmate in need. These small gestures can brighten someone's day.

Community Service
Engage in community service together as a family. This can involve volunteering to support Maui wildfire survivors, cleaning up ʻōpala at the beach or park, or participating in a charity event. Experiencing the joy of helping others as an ʻohana can be a valuable lesson in kindness and empathy.

Let's celebrate World Kindness Day and beyond by spreading love, compassion, and understanding. By practicing kindness, we improve the lives of those around us and nurture a more caring and harmonious world for our children to grow in.
