KS Kapālama girls upset ʻIolani to claim DI state volleyball crown

Nov. 4, 2024

The Kamehameha Schools Kapālama girls volleyball team found themselves in an unusual position going into Saturday’s New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I State Championship. They were both underdogs and defending state champs.

The underdog status was in large part because of ʻIolani, the team they bested in Saturday’s championship. Five of the Warriors’ six conference losses this season came at the hands of the Raiders, who had earned the top tournament seed. The Warriors, on the other hand, were unseeded and had to topple two unbeatens, Baldwin and Moanalua, just to make it into the title match.
Tournament-tested, the Warriors left it all on the court on championship night, earning a four-set victory 25-16, 25-16, 15-25, 25-22. Junior Kalaweloilehua Chock and senior Kamanaʻokalani Goldstein each notched 17 kills and eight digs.

This is the 13th state title under head coach Chris Blake, who after the match, shared with Hawaii News Now why this win was so special.

“We’re playing for our school, we’re playing for our princess and finding a way to play for the lāhui is super important for us, but for us to step out and do that right here in the last match of the season, it’s always our goal and I’m proud of the girls and how they did, proud of the staff and all of the staff that allowed the success to happen.”

This is the Warriors’ 25th state volleyball championship title.
