After another incredible performance at the HHSAA Track & Field championships this year, Chenoa Frederick probably could have expected this.

Today, the rising senior and track & field standout was officially, once again, named Gatorade Hawaiʻi Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year!

This year, she took home four gold medals in state competition, building upon the three earned the previous year.  Frederick broke the tape in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56 seconds, while soaring 38 feet, 7 inches to win the triple jump and 18-2.75 to capture the long jump. She also cleared 5-1 to win the high jump. On her own, she put up enough points to outscore all but two of the girls teams this year.

Frederick has also maintained a 3.05 GPA in the classroom.

“Chenoa has God-given talent, but she’s also mentally tough,” said Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi track & field coach Manly Kanoa. “She has a fierce competitive drive—she knows when it’s game time and she just hates to lose.”

Now, Frederick is a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced later this month.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes the nation’s most elite high school athletes for not only athletic excellence, but also for high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.

In addition to the recognition, Gatorade will donate $1,000 to a sport-based organization of Chenoa’s choosing!  She is also eligible to submit an essay to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for the organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year. Since the program’s inception in 1985, Gatorade Player of the Year award recipients have won hundreds of professional and college championships, and many have also turned into pillars in their communities, becoming coaches, business owners and educators.

Top of the podium is a familiar place for Frederick, winning both BIIF and State gold all three years she's competed.

A new event for her this year, Frederick found success in the high jump, setting best-in-the-state marks in the event.

Frederick completes a three-peat in the triple jump, once again earning BIIF gold.
