Aloha mai kākou,

Every morning, I read about the latest COVID-19 figures in our islands — this week, surging new cases, positive test rates, outbreaks and community transmission. By almost any health metric, we are moving in the wrong direction. It is also becoming painfully real for us, with so many more of our loved ones becoming ill. While the majority of cases are on Oʻahu, the loss is widespread.

At Kamehameha Schools, we have kuleana to do our part to protect our community.

Presently, all of our Kamehameha Schools K-12 campuses and preschools are starting in distance learning mode. Today, we are extending this distance learning period through fall break for all campuses and preschools.

We recognize this may be personally difficult for our haumāna, kumu, staff and families. Mahalo nui for your contribution to a collective, community effort. Each of our campuses and preschools will be sharing additional details later today.

We hope that we will be able to welcome our haumāna back to campus soon and will do everything we can to plan for a safe return, but it is too soon to make any projections about when that might happen. For now, we will keep our focus on excellence in teaching and learning in a virtual space.

I pray all of you take good care of yourselves and your loved ones.

Me ke aloha,
Jack
