New keiki play area makes big splash at Windward Mall

May 12, 2016

Kamehameha Schools recently joined representatives from Windward Mall and HMSA to celebrate the grand opening of a new 1,102 square-foot keiki play area. The area is located on the lower level of the mall’s Macy’s wing, fronting Big City Diner.

Themed “Hawaiʻi’s Sea Treasures,” the space furthers both KS and Windward Mall’s efforts to raise awareness regarding ocean protection. The play area includes a coral stack for keiki to climb, a dolphin and waterfall slide and colorful carpeting depicting the ocean and marine life.

KS owns and operates the property located on KS land in Heʻeia. The mall is home to more than 110 stores and eateries, along with a KS One-Stop-Shop that offers educational program information and help to complete KS applications for admissions, financial aid and more. Revenues generated by Windward Mall support KS’ educational mission.

KS also protects the region’s ocean areas by adding three rain gardens located outside of Windward Mall, which help remove pollutants harmful to stream and marine ecosystems.
