Papahana Kuaola (map)

Papahana Kuaola will host a free, community-wide 20-Year Community Celebration & Learning Day on July 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its Waipao site in Heʻeia. This milestone event honors two decades of ʻāina-based education, cultural practice, and community stewardship, while welcoming families and community members to reconnect with the land and with one another.

The event is designed as an interactive, place-based learning experience featuring hands-on educational and work stations facilitated throughout the site, primarily within the warehouse and across the upper lawn. Live local music will play throughout the event to create a welcoming, culturally grounded atmosphere, while a large central lawn will remain open for gathering and movement. Community vendors will be positioned along the outer edge of the lawn, and water and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided by Papahana Kuaola. Admission is free and open to the public.

Featured stations may include:

Lauhala weaving demonstrations:
Share the process of preparing and weaving lauhala and the cultural significance of sustainable harvesting.

  • Native plant propagation workshops: Participants learn how to prepare seedlings and understand the importance of native species in watershed health.
  • Loʻi kalo stewardship demonstrations: Highlight kalo as both a cultural and food system foundation.
  • Mālama wai and watershed education: Focus on water flow, erosion awareness, and the relationship between upland care and food resilience.
  • ʻĀina-based youth learning showcases: Highlight projects developed through Papahana Kuaola programs.

These stations reflect Papahana Kuaola’s ongoing programming and provide practical, intergenerational learning opportunities that encourage community responsibility and mālama ʻāina.
