Wa'a talks with Hōkūle'a

Biology students connect with Hōkūle'a crew members

Oct. 4, 2016

Contributed by Lokelani Patrick

Haumāna in Kumu Brooke Holderbaum’s Biology class spoke with the crew on the Hōkūleʻa. While many of the haumāna’s questions were not biology-related, they were very excited to make a connection with the crew and listen to Maui-born crew member Nakua share his experiences on Hōkūleʻa.  The timing of the talks fit well in this quarter – after students studied latitude, climate, weather, currents, and Hōkūleʻaʻs course; the day after a star compass presentation by guest lecturer Pā’anakalā Babayan Tanaka, educator and apprentice navigator with Hui o Waʻa Kaulua, Maui’s Voyaging Society.

Pictured are the haumāna in our classroom setting and Nakua projected on the screen.  Unfortunately the moments when the haumāna were laughing or throwing their hands up weren’t captured in the photos.   PC:  KSM/Holderbaum.
