Super Saturday: KS wins state titles in 3 different sports

Feb. 10, 2025

The winter sports season has been unforgettable this year for Nā Kula ʻo Kamehameha with four state titles so far. Three of them happened on the same day, Feb. 8, 2025!

The Kamehameha Schools Kapālama girls basketball team reached the pinnacle of their season by knocking off ʻIolani, the five-time defending state champion 40-34 in the Pacific Century Fund Team Aloha/HHSAA Division I State Championship. This is the first DI state title for KS Kapālama in more than a decade.

Nihoa Dunn led the charge with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The junior was named Most Outstanding Player and told ScoringLive that this win was the result of a strong kahua.

"This wasn't just this year; this was three-plus years in the making. We did this for the people who came before us, the ones here with us now and those who are coming after us and it’s just so awesome," said Dunn.

Six days after Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi girls won the Division II Motiv8 Foundation HHSAA state title, the boys followed suit in a 1-0 victory over Kapaʻa in the championship game at the Waipiʻo Penninsula Soccer Complex.

The game-winning goal happened in the 59th minute and came from an unlikely player. Senior Kingston Akuna is normally a backup defender, but got thrust into a striker position, where he notched the championship-winning goal, the first of his high school career. The victory capped off an unbeaten season.

Out in the water, Kamehameha Schools Kapālama pulled off an impressive feat Saturday Feb. 8 in the 2025 Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Canoe Paddling Championships at Keʻehi Lagoon. The boys, girls and mixed crews all won championship titles for a fantastic finish to an incredible season.
