Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for the season of Lent to honor the deep Christian faith of KS founder Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

The first Lent devotional was posted on Ash Wednesday, February 18. This special Good Friday devotional features the manaʻo of KS ‘Ike Hawaiʻi Cultural Development Director Keʻala Kwan.

This devotional includes the hīmeni (hymn) “ʻEkolu Mea Nui” (There are Three Important Virtues). Sing along with KS Cultural Specialist Hauʻoli Akaka and his sons Halehaku Seabury and ʻElia Akaka in the video below.

Although the devotionals were designed with students in mind, they can also be used by families or individuals to celebrate the coming of Easter.

Each Lent devotional includes:

  • A scripture reading in ʻolelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) and English
  • Some manaʻo (thoughts)
  • Questions to ponder
  • A pule (prayer)
  • A lesson, pule and activity especially for keiki
  • A hīmeni (hymn)

KS Maui Kahu Kalani Wong, KS Kapālama Kahu Kordell Kekoa and KS Cultural Specialist Hauʻoli Akaka teamed up to develop the devotional series and asked KS faculty and staff members to share their manaʻo (thoughts) of what lent means to them.

It is their hope that the devotionals provide the KS ‘ohana with strength and encouragement during this blessed season. The remaining devotionals will be posted every Friday until Easter, April 5.
