Living Our Faith: KS launches new spiritual focus and faith hub

Sept. 2, 2025

Kamehameha Schools begins every new school year with a guiding spiritual theme. For 2025-26, our kahu are reaching back to our aliʻi, rooted in scripture and rich with kaona: E mau ke ola i ke Kumuola – Life endures by the Source of Life.

Inspired by Kolosa 1:17 — “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” — this focus reminds us that Iesū is our heleuma, the firm and steady anchor in life’s ever-changing waters. Reflecting on this foundation, Kamehameha Schools Maui Kahu Kanani Franco KSK’91 relies on Psalm 46:1 as a reminder that God is near, strong and ready to help in times of trouble.

“During seasons of challenge or change, I find strength and grounding in this pauku pa‘ana‘au my grandmother taught me,” Franco said. “It reminds me that I am never alone in facing difficulties. Holding onto this truth helps me stay anchored in my faith, no matter the season.”

That kind of faith isn’t new. Queen Liliʻuokalani’s trust in God carried her through the theft of her kingdom. Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s vision for Hawaiʻi’s future was grounded in Ke Akua. Despite the storms they faced, they turned to prayer, scripture and song. They leaned into their faith and trusted that God would steady them as leaders, stewards and servants to their people.

Their legacy reminds us that we are called to do the same.

“There may be storms in the life of a student as the homework piles up, and storms in an ‘ohana as bills pile up, and storms in the community as tensions rise and discontent with each other grows,” said Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Kahu Manu Naeʻole KSK’96. “A properly set anchor in Ke Akua means we have a steadfast and firm hope that somehow…God will hold us steady in the storm and see us out the other side of it all.”

And like our kūpuna before us, we are not without tools. We have inherited countless ways to stay grounded in faith. To help carry those values forward, Kamehameha Schools has refreshed its Our Faith webpage, a digital space grounded in scripture, manaʻo and multimedia created by nā kahu to support our spiritual growth.

“We are excited about the reboot of the Our Faith page because it means that people from all backgrounds can access it to find faith resources,” Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kahu Kaunaloa Boshard KSK’77 said. “As we continue to grow spiritually, we will develop better ways or methods to survey the needs of our KS ‘ohana and eventually expand our scope of services for our lāhui.”

This vibrant online space is an invitation for all of us to reflect, reconnect and stay anchored in Ke Akua together.
