He manaʻo o ke kahu

Have you seen a Leatherman? It’s the all-in-one tool that is meant to be a toolbox to hang on your belt. It has several types of knives, a can opener, bottle opener, pliers, flat head screwdriver, Philips head screwdriver, file, ruler, wire stripper, and probably ten more things that I’m missing. It’s like the Swiss Army knives that we had growing up – everyone had one. It couldn’t be the little one with just a few tools, it had to be the big one that had a fork and a spoon. These gadgets were built for multiple purposes. Whatever you needed done, there was a tool for it.

You were made in the same way. Well, maybe not in the multitool way but you were made for a purpose. We are products of ke Akua’s workmanship. From our internal organs to every hair on our head, ke Akua put us all together – AND GOD DON’T MAKE NO JUNK! We were made for a purpose, no nā hana maikaʻi, to do good works. In life we each have a call and our purpose has been laid out for each of us by ke Akua.

When you think about that, it’s like being the pinch hitter and you are called upon by the coach for that one important play. You have the whole game resting on your shoulders, and you need to step up to bat, to get that run.

It was for this purpose you were made. But to know what your purpose or your job is, is not easy. Not like when you’re at bat for the winning run. You step up and you hit the ball. The call, task, kuleana, purpose that you are called to do can be a little harder to see. So, what do you do? You keep doing what is your strength.

E kuʻupau i ke aloha – love with all your might, e kuʻupau i ka lawelawe – serve with all your might, and e kuʻupau i ka pule – pray with all your might. Keep doing what you do, with the strength that God provides. May ka ‘Uhane Hemolele (the Holy Spirit) guide you to where you need to be, when you need to be there, to do what you need to do. And the world will be touched because you were faithful.
