In support of the “Help Keep Our Schools Open” campaign, which emphasizes the importance of in-person learning and its positive impacts on students and teachers alike, Kamehameha Schools has partnered with various local organizations to produce a town hall recalling lessons learned by haumāna and kumu during COVID-19.
Hosted by HNN anchor Māhealani Richardson KSK’91, “Evolving Education: Learning through COVID,” premiers Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB and all Hawaiʻi News Now (HNN) digital platforms, and re-airs Thursday, Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. on K5 and Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. on KHNL.
Highlights from the 30-minute broadcast include manaʻo from Pearl City High School Kumu Oscar Ada who shared the importance of empathy during these trying times: “What the pandemic has shown us, or let me know, is a lot of these kids were more open about some of the issues that they had to go through, and that helped me understand what the next generation is going to go through.”
KS Kapālama senior Joshua Ching, reflected on the need to pivot in order to move forward with his education. He added, “I think (COVID) taught me that a lot of the things that we have right now can just be taken away, so we have to make the most of what we do have, even if we don't have a lot.”
A second televised program airs in December and documents a day in the life of students at several schools, allowing viewers the opportunity to see first-hand how the pandemic altered their in-person learning experience.
