Nov. 25, 2025

Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha has been making headlines for initiatives that reflect who we are and the futures we’re building with our lāhui. From ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi on the football field to ʻāina-based dining, these stories capture our mission in motion.

Here’s a quick roundup of where KS has been featured recently.

How Kamehameha Hawaiʻi’s football team learned to communicate in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaii News Now)
Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi’s football team is gaining attention for calling all its plays, stunts and blitzes in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, a practice head coach Kealoha Wengler brought from his years in kaiapuni. The transition took about five years as coaches and players learned the language together, with fluent students like freshman quarterback Kahekili Makekau helping teammates master terminology. Players say the shift strengthens their identity as kānaka and connects them to Pauahi’s legacy.

Don’t be alarmed! HFD holds mock firefighting drills in Kalihi (Hawaii News Now)
The Honolulu Fire Department is conducting live firefighting training on ʻĀina Pauahi in Kapālama Kai by transforming two vacant restaurants into replica single-family homes complete with theatrical smoke to prepare crews for real-world scenarios.

Hawaii Seaglider Initiative expands with 3 prominent partners (The Garden Isle)

Every Meal a Lesson: Kamehameha Schools’ Approach to Food, Identity, and Resilience (Hawaiʻi Ulu Cooperative)
KS is featured for its culturally grounded approach to food service, treating every meal as an extension of the classroom. By partnering with Flik Dining Services and the Hawai‘i ‘Ulu Cooperative, KS centers  on ʻulu, kalo, and other canoe crops to strengthen student identity, support local farmers, and build community resilience.

Maui County Council backs Kamehameha Schools in lawsuit (The Maui News)
Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha Maui students won unanimous backing from the Maui County Council, which passed a resolution supporting KS as it defends its admissions policy and the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Haumāna delivered powerful testimony about the opportunities and ʻohana they’ve found at KS, moving councilmembers to speak out, including Councilmember Nohelani Uʻu-Hodgins, who said she was “so upset that we’re at this point again… where Hawaiians have to continually defend what little we have left.”
