Aloha Kākou e Nā ‘Ohana me Nā Haumāna o Ke Kula Kiʻekiʻe -

The journey that the entire world has been on over the past year has had its share of challenges and opportunities.  At Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kula Kiʻekiʻe, we continue to reflect on where we have been and the multiple milestones that have been reached in the various designed models and programs for our haumāna since March 2020 and as we head into the final quarter of this 2020-2021 school year.  Last week, a message went out to our ‘ohana of Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi campus regarding the educational program for our campus beginning March 29, 2021 (see the message from Poʻokula Kāhealani Naeʻole-Wong).

I am sending as succinctly yet detailed as possible high school’s plans in transitioning our high school students back to campus by cohorts beginning March 29, 2021 based on what we have learned with safe in-person presence on campus since October, within a learning environment with multiple layers of protocol, and being informed by multiple data points vs. single guideline/data point.

HS EDUCATIONAL MODEL FOR  4TH QUARTER

  • High school will be moving to the original educational model established for the start of the SY 2020-2021 school year on August 12, 2020.
  • Beginning Monday, March 29, 2021, our high school students will be invited back to our high school campus.
  • As we have initiated in August, 2020, given our understanding of space at the high school - high school students will be invited back by ALPHA:
    • Cohort A: Last Name A-K (On-Campus: Monday & Wednesday*)
    • Cohort B: Last Name L-Z (On-Campus: Tuesday & Thursday*)
  • High School will honor the distance learning model selection that students and ‘ohana made in November, to remain working virtually from home. But, because of the way it was set-up for second semester, students and ʻohana can choose to return to the on-campus hybrid program, and are encouraged to do so.
  • Over the past few months, our kumu have been innovative in their approach to instruction and reaching out to their students.  Teachers have worked with students virtually while students are in the classroom on a single lesson.  In other instances, our hoakumu have been flexible in how their class period is utilized between students on distance learning, those present in the classroom, and providing one-on-one support as needed.
  • Students must follow all synchronous, asynchronous, and off-campus learning instructions given by their teachers
  • Currently, Fridays are still designated to be office hours for our students.  Our high school will remain open for all KSH HS students that may need access. However to ensure bus transportation is available for those that need to be on campus – students will need to sign up.  Please use this link to sign-up to be on campus on Fridays beginning April 16, 2021 (April 2 is a Holiday.  April 7 – 9th graders will be invited on campus for testing while Grade 10-12 will work virtually from home.)
  • Over the course of the year, we have had a number of students working during the normal school day in off-campus jobs.
    • Our expectations is that students be present on-campus during scheduled cohort classes for the remaining two months of the school year.

DENSITY
Based on information and data, all classrooms will be set-up with the maximum allowable distancing spacing in that area as recommended; operating at 50% capacity.

SAFETY PROCEDURES CONTINUE!
Again, as we are monitoring the process of students on campus – the safety AND support of your child are our priorities.

FIRST THING IN THE MORNING:

  • If you are not feeling well – do not leave your home.
  • If you have a cough, have a fever, or are sneezing – do not leave your home.
  • If you recently went for a COVID test but you didn’t get the results back – do not leave your home.

Once students arrive on campus, students will adhere to all established COVID-19 safety measures, policies, rules, and recommendations.

Social distancing, wearing a face mask, and continuing hand sanitizing are the primary agents in keeping the trajectory of a safe place.

All students will conduct the safety check-ins referenced below as required at the bus stop (if you are catching the bus) or at school.

  • Bus riders will be cleared by the bus drivers (see more bus transportation protocols on our website). ‘Ohana members cannot leave the bus area until you board the bus.
  • Students catching the bus should have their bus pass at all times.
  • Student drivers will drive to student parking lot where you will be cleared outside of the HS administration building.
  • Students being dropped off will do so at Paiʻea Stadium Parking Lot (long white tent leading to Lunalilo Hale).  You will be cleared with bottom protocols at Lunalilo.
  • IF YOU ARRIVE AFTER 7:55 am – YOU MUST REPORT TO THE HS OFFICE TO BE CLEARED WITH THE WELLNESS CHECK-IN AND HAVE YOUR TEMPERATURE CHECKED. You will be directed to where you should report to.
  • IF YOU ARE BEING PICKED-UP EARLY FROM SCHOOL – ‘OHANA MUST CALL FRONT OFFICE FOR EARLY RELEASE!

Our Ho’okanaka Educational Centers will continue to serve as the hub of support for respective grade levels:

  • Grade 9 – Koaiʻa Gym – Kumu Kalimahana, Mr. Grahovac
  • Grade 10 – Keawe Dining Hall – Kumu Leolani Waipa, Ms. Williams
  • Grade 11 – Lunalilo Hale – Kumu Māhealani, Ms. Chaidez, Uncle Eddy
  • Grade 12 – Kekuʻiapoiwa – Kumu Terri, Kumu Kūlani

DO THE STUDENT WELLNESS CHECK-IN EVERY DAY YOU'RE ON-CAMPUS

HOʻOKANAKA CENTERS
Hoʻokanaka Centers will serve as an educational support center for the respective grade levels.  Students will report to Hoʻokanaka Centers when they are not in their classroom for scheduled classes.

MODIFIED SCHEDULES & EARLY RELEASE
Students on modified schedules will be granted late arrival to school prior to their scheduled class and early release.

  • Late arrivals and early release must be communicated to high school front office.  Late arrivals will have to do their student wellness check-ins and temperature scan at the main office before proceeding to class.
  • We will continue to follow all student absence and tardy procedures.

ATHLETICS
Athletics will continue for the remaining of the school year.

  • Student athletes on their cohort day will report to athletics at the end of the school day.
  • For students on NON-COHORT DAYS, they are welcomed to participate in athletics but must provide own transportation to ensure safe capacity of campus with cohort students.  Students are expected to complete all online courses at home before they proceed to campus.  Students should not leave class early.   Once on-campus, students will report to the front of Koaiʻa Gym and wait patiently for student wellness check-ins and temperature scanning by athletic personnel before being directed further.  Students should not be wandering around campus at any time.
