He pūko ʻa kani ʻāina – like a coral reef that grows into an island, hundreds of haumāna from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama and kula from across Oʻahu engaged with organizations, businesses and advisors at the 2019 Kamehameha Schools Career Fair with the goal of discovering potential career pathways.
More than 250 high school juniors and seniors from KS, Damien Memorial School, Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue and multiple community education organizations gathered Tuesday at the Kaʻiwakīloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center to network with upwards of 25 prospective employers, ask questions and fill out job research worksheets to use when applying in the future. Participants also calculated annual budgets to realize how career choices affect other aspects of life including housing, transportation and necessities.
“Ke Ali‘i Pauahi would want all of you to be good and industrious young men and women, and that blends perfectly with what today is all about,” said Steve Morales, a counselor at KS Kapālama. “We want you to apply this learning to real life, and connect Hawaiian values throughout the process.”
The event was organized through a collaboration between KS’ Kāpili ‘Oihana career pathways and Post-High School Counseling teams in tandem with faculty and counselors from KS Kapālama.
“There’s a lot of enthusiasm, and all the presenters are really excited because they want us to be part of their organizations,” said KSK senior Mana Leonard. “I really got a good feel for what some of these groups, including Teach for America, have to offer.”
