First Nations’ Futures Program (FNFP) fellows Keith Chang and Keli‘i Kapali stopped by the Hawaii News Now studios earlier this week to talk with Sunrise co-anchor Steve Uyehara about how the program deepens the capacity of emerging, indigenous leaders.

Both fellows shared about their journey and described the progression from spending two weeks at the Woods’ Institute for the Environment at Stanford University to learning from current leaders at the program’s  ‘Aha Nauā Lelepā and then working on a project as a cohort.

Chang, a 2011-2012 Papa Pōhaku cohort member and KS land assets manager, shared his experience working with his group on a land use project for Keauhou, Kona looking at the different parcels in that area and how its use could be maximized to its full potential.

Kapali, a current 2014-2015 Papa Mālamalama fellow and land planner for PBR Hawai‘i, previewed her cohort’s Hawai‘i project, which similarly seeks to develop an ahupua‘a plan for Ka‘ūpūlehu on Hawai‘i Island.
