He Manaʻo o ke Kahu Kalani Wong, KS Maui
I did the funeral service for a local businessman who was foundational in forming the local community with the development of Lahaina town, Kaʻanapali, and Makena. His love for the arts helped establish a center for great music and outstanding art to be enjoyed. A year after his passing, I met with the family to see how they were doing and used the words of Hawaiʻi Aloha, to remind the people of the heart of this man who really loved Hawaiʻi and its people.
E Hawaii e kuʻu one hānau e,
Kuʻu home kulaiwi nei,
Oli no au i na pono lani ou
E Hawaii, aloha e
E hauoli e na opio o Hawaii nei
Oli e! Oli e!
Mai na aheahe makani e pa mai nei
Mau ke aloha, no Hawaii
O Hawai‘i, O sands of my birth
My native home
I rejoice in the blessings of heaven
O Hawai‘i, aloha.
Happy youth of Hawai‘i
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Gentle breezes blow
Love always for Hawai‘i.
This mele was written by Rev. Lorenzo Lyons, or better known as Makua Lyons, a missionary to the islands, arriving in 1831. He learned the Hawaiian language and translated many hymns for the people to sing of their love for ke Akua in their mother tongue. He loved the ‘āina and nā kanaka maoli.
These two kāne had a deep aloha for Hawaiʻi and its people. They did what they could to share that aloha so we might have what we have today. What about you? Do you practice aloha ‘āina? Psalm 24 reminds us of all that this earth and everything that lives on it is ke Akua’s. If we can see that we are called to be stewards of it, we’d want to give it our all to be sure to mālama i ka ‘āina a me nā poʻe. As we care for the people, we bring life to the lāhui- hānai i ke keiki, ola ka lāhui- nurture the child and the lāhui thrives. So, let us renew our spirit of aloha ‘āina, to bring about a renewed life for the Hawaiian nation and its people, thereby taking great care for this corner of God’s creation.
