Comparing Measurements

Mar. 1, 2016

Contributed by Kristen Purdy

Students are currently focusing on the math concept of measurement. Kumu Kaʻōpūiki’s class started the unit with comparing lengths.  Students had to determine which person had a longer string and how they would compare the strings with little to no error, for example students figured out that they must line up the two ends of the string evenly, tip to tip.

To engage students, the class used height measurements of each child in the class.   However, the strings were passed out to different students, so students had to truly align the strings and not their personal height.  Students then had to order themselves depending on their string from shortest to longest.  The strings were taped onto a chart and the class discussed any errors that were found and how it could be corrected.
