Kauʻi Burgess has been named Kamehameha Schools’ director of Community Relations, a newly created position within the Communications Group that was initiated as part of the group’s reorganization to align with SP2020 goals. She began her new role on Dec. 7, 2015.
Burgess will be responsible for directing KS’ community relations team and strategies to ensure that relationships and engagement with key stakeholder groups and community, government and Hawaiian-serving organizations are thriving and aligned with KS’ mission and brand.
She will also help ensure close collaboration with the Community Engagement and Resources Group and others throughout Kamehameha Schools who engage community stakeholders to strategically advance the work of the organization.
“I feel blessed to have been hired at such a time as this,” Burgess said. “With KS’ new 25-year vision for a thriving Lāhui, unified community efforts around advocacy and education, and the sharing of resources with others to accomplish shared goals, it’s an exciting time to come on board. I’m happy that the Community Relations team will play a key role in such a bold effort.”
Burgess said her immediate goals are to build a community relations team, implement an institution-wide system that helps track and streamline ongoing KS community outreach efforts and identify key stakeholder groups for ongoing strategic organizational relationships.
“Kauʻi is a tireless worker who has more than 20 years of experience in direct involvement in serving Hawaiian communities,” said Communications Group Vice President Kevin Cockett. “Most recently, Kauʻi served as Communications’ integrated services manager for Community Engagement and Resources, and she did tremendous work engaging community stakeholders, including driving message strategy. She brings much passion and experience to this new role in community relations.”
Burgess, a former education specialist for ALU Like, Inc., and program coordinator for the John A. Burns School of Medicine, has been with Kamehameha Schools since 2007. She has served KS as a community relations specialist and integrated strategies manager.
She attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo on a four-year volleyball scholarship where she studied natural sciences and Hawaiian language.
Kauʻi is a tireless worker who has more than 20 years of experience in direct involvement in serving Hawaiian communities... She brings much passion and experience to this new role in community relations.
