A new management position has been created as part of Kamehameha Schools’ Mālama Ola Division, a group focused on student well-being, safety and health.
Former Kamehameha Schools Maui Director of Operations Carl Alexander has taken on the new position of Education Safety and Risk manager focusing on student well-being across all KS educational programs.
Alexander reports to Director of Student Health Services Dr. Kenneth Fink and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure student safety, employee workplace safety and programs that minimize environmental impacts across all KS campuses, preschools, community education and Ho‘okahua cultural vibrancy programs.
“The Education Safety and Risk manager provides leadership and coordination throughout the educational system, including the three campuses, 30 preschools and numerous extension program sites, to ensure that students have a safe learning environment,” said Fink.
“Learning in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe is one of the five ‘Whole Child Tenets’ to enable learner growth. This new position highlights the emphasis KS places on student safety.”
Alexander spent almost 14 years as KSM’s campus operations director where he oversaw fiscal and operational support services. Alexander’s kuleana also included overseeing the safety training of the staff, including food handling and water safety.
“Carl has many years working for KS and has a foundational understanding of campus culture and operations,” continued Fink. “KS was fortunate that he agreed to serve in this position on an interim basis during the process to make a permanent hire. Carl demonstrated his initiative and ability to find answers, collaborate with others to implement changes, and proactively and reactively respond in a timely manner to keep our haumāna safe.”
In his new position, Alexander will oversee tri-campus, preschools and other KS properties used for education programs with safety inspections and risk analysis to identify and address safety hazards. He’ll also collaborate with KS’ internal Legal Group to develop and implement proactive strategies to properly address and/or resolve occupational safety or environmental health items and advise education leaders of regulatory responsibilities pertaining to federal occupational safety, health, environmental and infection control mandates.
Alexander is a University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa graduate, who holds a bachelor’s degree general agriculture and master of business administration degree. He began in the new position on September 28.
