Huliko‘a Kaiāulu, a scholar speaker series sponsored by KS in partnership with UH Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and MA‘O Organic Farms, will launch its new 2015 season on Tuesday, January 27. The presentations will take place at the new Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili location.

The series is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the pursuit of higher education and listen to scholars from the Wai‘anae Coast share their mana‘o, while learning more about topics that impact their lives as residents on the Coast.

This month’s featured scholars:

  • Cheryse Sana will speak about reconnecting ourselves through college and aloha ‘āina in her presentation entitled "Grow Food, Cultivate Community." Sana currently serves as the farm manager at MA‘O Organic Farms and is a member of KS’ First Nations’ Futures Program Papa Mālamalama cohort.  She was born and raised in Lualualei.

  • Leimomi Kanagusuku of Mā‘ili will present "Lawe I Ka Ma‘alea A Kū‘ono‘ono (Acquire a skill and make it deep)". As a current medical student, Kanagusuku will share her mana'o about the importance of investing in education for keiki and the impact it has as a social determinant of health as well as some highlights of her own journey.

“The future of our Native Hawaiian people relies on many things, but a vast majority of its success lies within our keiki,” shares Kanagusuku.

The event takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Early Learning Kauhale at the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili(87-790 Kulauku St). A free, simple dinner will be provided and representatives from higher education will be present. To better prepare for these events, an RSVP would be greatly appreciated. Please email kapua@ksbe.edu or call 670-2045 to RSVP or for more information.

The series has scheduled the following dates for future presentations: February 24, March 31 and April 28. Visit www.ksbe.edu/kapua for more information or announcements of topics for those presentations.
