KS Trustee Chair Corbett Kalama recently shared his mana‘o on sustainability with invited guests of the World Conservation Congress Opening Ceremony at the Neal Blaisdell Center.Kalama harkened back to his childhood and growing up in Kailua, where he used the ocean responsibly to provide food for his family while also understanding and honoring the relationship between humans and the surrounding environment. He noted that Hawai‘i represents a microcosm of our planet, and emphasized the need to preserve the finite land, water and natural resources for future generations.Indigenous people – Kalama reminded the audience – lived and thrived within a sustainable society and culture, and it is appropriate to recognize such a successful model going forward. The congress is held every four years by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The global gathering was convened on U.S. soil for the first time after more than 60 years. This year’s event theme was “Planet at the Crossroads.”
