Highlights from the James B. Castle High School Poʻokela Academy hōʻike (demonstration) and wa‘a(canoe) blessing on May 14 and 15, 2015. Over the course of the year, students carved three wa‘a and hand carried those canoe from their high school to the ocean at Waikalua Loko I‘a (fishpond) about a mile and a half away. It was the first time in over 200 years that this practice had been performed in this moku. The next day, students celebrated by launching those wa‘a in the kai (sea waters) at Waikalua. Two of the three canoe have been donated to Waikalua and the third will eventually travel, by water, to Paepae o He‘eia.
