March 14, 2018
Culminating our countdown to Song Contest, is senior co-ed director and three time Louise Aoe McGregor Award winner, ʻElia Akaka. He will direct his class for the final time as they present “He Mele Lāhui Hawai‘i” written and composed by HRH Queen Liliʻuokalani, and arranged for the class of 2018 by Zachary A. Lum. Hear what this experience means to him and how Kamehameha can blossom through the gift and practice of mele. There is #moretothemele than music alone. Mele connects us to our language, to people and place, and to the communities we serve. Through that connection to their identity, greater civic engagement and a growing sense of their kuleana to lead, our haumāna join their generation’s movement to improve themselves, their communities and their lāhui. On March 16, 2018, the students of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School will come together to present the 98th annual Song Contest, pre-show at 6:30 p.m. followed by the live competition at 7:30 p.m. Watch on KGMB or join in our live broadcast online at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest. Once again, Song Contest will also be presented in ʻŌlelo HawaiʻI, as well as English. For instructions on how to activate your SAP function, visit our Song Contest website.
