Senior boys director Kona Abergas understands how mele can describe and connect us to places across our Islands so we can gain a greater appreciation for the beauty that exists in these wahi pana. He will lead his men though a journey from Hilo to Kawaihae, capturing the beauty of the five mauna along the way in “Nā Kuahiwi ‘Elima” written by Helen Desha Beamer and arranged by Zachary A. Lum. There is #moretothemele than music alone. Mele connects us to our language, to people and place, and to the communities we serve. Through that connection to their identity, greater civic engagement and a growing sense of their kuleana to lead, our haumāna join their generation’s movement to improve themselves, their communities and their lāhui. Watch the 98th annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest on Friday, March 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB or online at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest.
