Junior combined class director Miranda Burigsay knows that it’s not just a song, but the journey that she takes with her class each year that makes the Song Contest experience special. And through their mele “Hanohano Hanalei” composed by Alfred Alohikea and arranged by Matthew Urabe, she and her classmates will take the audience along with them on that journey back to Kauaʻi. There is #moretothemele than music alone. Mele connects us to our language, to people and place, and to the communities we serve. Through that connection to their identity, greater civic engagement and a growing sense of their kuleana to lead, our haumāna join their generation’s movement to improve themselves, their communities and their lāhui. Watch the 98th annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest on Friday, March 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB or online at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest.
