Being from Waiʻanae, sophomore co-ed director Pili Fronda is looking forward to leading his class in their performance of “Aloha ʻia ʻo Waiʻanae” as they look to repeat their award-winning performance from last year. Listen close, as they plan on giving a little tribute to that performance this year. As a musician himself, Pili knows the power of mele to convey history and that there is #moretothemele than music alone. Mele connects us to our language, to people and place, and to the communities we serve. Through that connection to their identity, greater civic engagement and a growing sense of their kuleana to lead, our haumāna join their generation’s movement to improve themselves, their communities and their lāhui. Watch the 98th annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest on Friday, March 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB or online at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest.
