New sophomore boys song director Taisamasama Kaiminaauao-Eteuati will lead his peers in singing “Wailua Alo Lahilahi” composed by HRH Liliʻuokalani and Kapoli and arranged by Nicholas Lum. For Taisamasama, the mele harkens back to garage-jamming with the uncles and aunties on Kauaʻi and having a good time. There is #moretothemele than music alone. Mele connects us to our language, to people and place, and to the communities we serve. Through that connection to their identity, greater civic engagement and a growing sense of their kuleana to lead, our haumāna join their generation’s movement to improve themselves, their communities and their lāhui. Watch the 98th annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest on Friday, March 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB or online at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest.
