Kamehameha Schools’ newest preschool site, Kikiwelawela Preschool, opened to haumāna in March and is named for the land on which it sits. One of many ʻili – or sections of land – within the ahupuaʻa of Heʻeia, Kikiwelawela can be translated as “stifling hot,” which may have referred to times when streamflow through this area was not as high as other places within Heʻeia. Flanked by the ahupua‘a of Kahalu‘u and Kāne‘ohe, He‘eia was famed for its rich water resources, and has undergone a miraculous transformation over the last several years as ʻāina-minded organizations have helped restore it to its former glory. We welcome our newest kamaliʻi to experience this vibrant, culture-rich outdoor classroom.
