Hoʻomaikaʻi to KS Hawaiʻi senior Ciana-Lei Bence on her accomplishments at the Hawaiʻi District Science and Engineering Fair. Her project titled, “Analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei Mass Across Varying Redshifts” was awarded first place in the physics and astronomy category, and she was the second place overall in the Senior Research division. Bence was also recognized with the Sierra Club Moku Loa Group’s Dr. Don Worsencroft Award and the Office of Naval Research (U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corp) Award. In addition to these accolades, Ciana-Lei is one of the State Science Fair finalist and earned a prestigious spot at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, Texas in May.




KS Hawaiʻi Hōʻike a Haʻi haumāna have been hard at work rehearsing for this year’s showcase, PAIʻEA, an ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi glam rock opera that focuses on Kamehameha’s early life, tests, and triumphs, and hits the Koaiʻa stage on March 9 and 10. Tickets will go on sale on Feb. 20, and are just $5, with early entrance VIP tickets available for $10. Proceeds will help defray travel costs as students are slated to travel with this production to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland this summer as part of the AHSTF by WorldStrides. Hauʻoli Lā Pilialoha - Happy Valentine's Day! It was a festive day throughout the ‘Aʻapueo campus as KS Maui Māhele Lalo haumāna sported pink, red, or white tops while Associated Students of Kamehameha Schools Māhele Luna haumāna put on their service hats to share fried rice with fellow schoolmates.

Five KS Maui hāumana attended the 2023 Teen Health Camp hosted by the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College and went through a series of workshops that covered a variety of topics including nurture & health, infectious diseases, stitches & sutures, casting, nursing, and dental workshops. Awards include: Makana Gomes & Deana Kamaka with their project ʻBac-Offʻ: Biomedical Science Community Recognition Award, 1st Place in Biomed Categor, A&B $100 cash prize and HSSEF Qualifier | Taylor Aloy & Damari Wright with their project ʻMenstrual Madnessʻ: 2nd Place in Behavioral and Social Science Category, Tie for 3rd Place for Overall Grand Award (fair winner) A&B $100 cash prize and HSSEF Qualifier | Kyani Bateman with her project ʻDoes Trauma Cause the Limbic System to Develop Faster in Teens?: Tie for 3rd Place for Overall Grand Award (fair winner), A&B $100 cash prize and HSSEF Qualifier | Lauryn DuBach with her project ʻDebunking Zodiac Signsʻ, A&B $100 cash prize and HSSEF Qualifier | Ava Davis with her project ʻParent Involvement vs Student Achievement: 1st Place in Behavioral and Social Science Category, A&B $100 cash prize and HSSEF Qualifier, Overall Grand Award (fair winner) and ISEF Qualifier.




Bringing the wisdom and experience of their kūpuna with them into the classroom, kula waena haumāna participated in an interdisciplinary project that combined lessons from science, social studies, and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. The young authors turned manaʻo gathered from interviews with their kūpuna into books that they then shared with their kula haʻahaʻa counterparts in the elementary school inspiring the cycle of ʻike-inspired storytelling to continue.




Hoʻomaikaʻi to the 12 Honors Science Research haumāna for representing KS Kapālama well at the Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools District Science and Engineering Fair. A special shoutout goes to Amara Martin and Madison Murata for placing first and third respectively with their projects. The following haumāna qualified for the State Science Fair in April: Amara Martin, Madison Murata, Christian Roy, Ethan Abraham, Kaimana Kau Haumāna selected as alternates for the State Science Fair are: Hope Rosenbush, Jack Poepoe, Clarice Hutchison, Breeana Kawatomari With her first-place finish, Amara has automatically been invited to compete in the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, Texas in May.




KS Kapālama recently held a signing ceremony for student ʻālapa koa who will be taking the next step in their life journey at respective collegiate institutions across the country. They include: Kya Kanoho: Basketball - Western Oregon University; Dane Palimoʻo: Baseball - University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo; Kealiʻi Ah Yat: Football - University of Montana; Caleb Okada: Baseball - Saint Martin's University; Puamakamaekuikahanohaweo DeSoto: Surfing - Pepperdine University; Rylee Lapilio-Bajet: Volleyball - Linfield University.
