Community members, dignitaries, collaborators and KS staffers gathered in Our Kakaʻako last week to celebrate the blessing and grand opening of The Flats at Puʻunui located on Kamehameha Schools land. The recently completed development is a reserved housing rental project that includes 88 residential units, made up of a mix of studios, one- bedroom, one-bedroom plus den, two-bedroom, three-bedroom units, and 188 parking spaces.
The morning started with a mele aloha performed by KS Director of Community Relations Kauʻi Burgess. Guest speakers at the event included KS Chief Financial Officer Scott Topping, KS Trustee Lance Wilhelm, KS Chief Executive Officer Jack Wong, and City and County of Honolulu Executive Director Jun Yang. The program concluded with a blessing by KS Kapālama Kahu Kordell Kekoa. Following the event, attendees enjoyed island-style tapas created by the campus’ Food and Nutrition Services team.
The Flats at Puʻunui project brings to mind an ‘ōlelo no‘eau, ‘O kēia ʻu ʻuku e nui ana – “This smallness will be big later.” This saying can refer to a small place that may develop into a large one. Pu‘unui is the traditional place name of the ‘ili, or land sub-division. It sits within the ahupua‘a of Honolulu, which is part of the moku of Kona O‘ahu.
