Over 500 members of the Kamehameha Schools ʻohana camped out at KS Kapālama’s Konia Circle recently as part of the August 16 American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraiser.
Supporters of the overnight event took turns walking or running the circle in celebration of cancer survivors or in remembrance of loved ones who have fought or are fighting cancer. Among those remembered was KS founder Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop who succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 52.
The "Relay Warriors" included 36 alumni class teams with members who graduated as far back as 1948!
The relay raised over $97,000 for the cancer society. Additional monies were raised through on-site sales of items like prune mui, pizza, lemonade, cotton candy, popcorn and cookies. Funds will go toward cancer research and survivor support.
KS photographer Michael Young was on hand to capture some of the highlights of the event. To learn about cancer prevention, visit the American Cancer Society website.
